Mmmm...Brain Food...

October 27, 2008
Halloween is almost here! While most parents are trying their best not to think about what their kids will be eating tonight, we're hot on the trail of yummy, healthy foods you can ply your kids with tomorrow. To start, you may have some luck trading some candy for Cabot cheese. :)

Barbara Quinn, a registered dietitian, has some suggestions to help your kids recover from their sugar rush, and also offers some food for thought about the many benefits of essential fatty acids (like the Omega-3s found in our Omega-3 DHA Cheddar) for your kids' health:

Rethink food -- literally. Unhealthy diets -- especially those high in trans fats and saturated fats -- adversely affect learning, according to [UCLA neurophysiology professor Fernando] Gomez-Pinilia. Other fats, such as the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, walnuts and flaxseed, are essential for normal brain function and have been shown to enhance cognitive abilities. Studies show that children with increased intakes of omega-3 fatty acids have better reading and spelling performance and fewer behavioral problems.
DHA -- the most abundant omega-3 fatty acid in the brain -- is especially important during periods of brain development such as pregnancy, infancy and childhood. One easy way to add more omega-3 DHA to your child's diet: Pack a sandwich made with canned salmon or tuna a couple times a week.

Or, if your kids aren't into fish (I know I wasn't when I was younger), a great substitute is Cabot's 50% Reduced Fat Omega-3 DHA Cheddar. This cheese tastes great and melts just like our regular 50% Reduced Fat Cheddar, so it's perfect for grilled cheese sandwiches or cubed for a healthy after-school snack.

Plus, each one-ounce serving provides 32 mg of renewable, vegetarian sourced Omega-3 DHA, giving you 20% of your 160 mg daily requirement of DHA. It's as easy (and tasty) as that!

Hey Jen cool website. After visiting the cabot creamery, I discovered a new love for cheese. I also look for cabot butter and cheese whenever I go to the store now because of the quality. I'm absolutely in love with the garlic herb cheese but my local grocer is always running out. Thanks for visiting my blog! I will definitly be back to yours for sure since it reminds me of the wonderful vacation we had in the beautiful state of Vermont.

Hey Monica. Thanks for the nice comment!

I've got to tell you...Cabot makes a high butterfat (84% I think) butter for cooking that is *divine*. If you can find it in a store near you, it's well worth it!

Also! If you want Cabot cheeses and you can't get them at your grocer's, you can always visit shopcabot.com to have most of our cheeses sent to you wherever you are. :)
