Dietitian: Cabot Reduced Fat Great for Sandwiches

November 10, 2008
sandwich.jpgCalorie Count, a free service of About.com Health, has an interesting feature where visitors can ask a Registered Dietitian questions about diet, health, food and more.

A recent "Ask Mary" (Mary Hartley, RD) answered this question from a reader: What is the healthiest cheese for sandwiches? I can't say I was surprised by the answer:

The healthiest cheeses are those that are lowest in saturated fat, such as fat-free or low-fat cheddar and American singles. Cabot makes a good low-fat cheddar and, if you like spreadable cheese, Laughing Cow is good because it does not have an artificial taste or mouth-feel. Another option is to cut back on other sources of saturated fat in your diet, such as meat and ice cream, to make room for a full-fat cheese, like muenster.

Ms. Hartley makes a really good point; while low-fat or reduced fat cheese is a great choice for sandwiches if you have cheese on your sandwiches on a regular basis, smart substitution means you can enjoy many other tasty cheeses that are higher in fat with little guilt!

I'm sure many of us limit less-healthy foods in our diets so that we can enjoy the occasional "treat". I love mayo, but I usually forgo it so I can have a bit more cheese (imagine that!) with a relatively clear conscience. What kinds of foods do you skimp on so that you can "reward" yourself?

The wife and I practically live on your 75% reduced fat sharp chedder. I have two requests.

1) Please make this cheese available in sandwich sized slices like your natural swiss comes in. Those of us looking for lower fat cheeses are going to try anything we see that is 75% reduced fat instead of 50% reduced fat, but those who want slices are not going to go to a block cheese to go to a lower fat percentage, and there are numerous 50% reduced fat

2) Please make a 75% reduced fat version of some of your other 50% reduced fat products such as the pepper jack and jalapeno.

Hi Paul!

Thanks for the comments and suggestions! I'm going to pass along your message to our product development folks.

Best,
Jen
