Calorie Count, a free service of About.com Health, has an interesting feature where visitors can ask a Registered Dietitian questions about diet, health, food and more. A recent "Ask Mary" (Mary Hartley, RD) answered this question from a reader: What is the healthiest cheese for sandwiches? I can't say I was surprised by the answer:
The healthiest cheeses are those that are lowest in saturated fat, such as fat-free or low-fat cheddar and American singles. Cabot makes a good low-fat cheddar and, if you like spreadable cheese, Laughing Cow is good because it does not have an artificial taste or mouth-feel. Another option is to cut back on other sources of saturated fat in your diet, such as meat and ice cream, to make room for a full-fat cheese, like muenster.
Ms. Hartley makes a really good point; while low-fat or reduced fat cheese is a great choice for sandwiches if you have cheese on your sandwiches on a regular basis, smart substitution means you can enjoy many other tasty cheeses that are higher in fat with little guilt!
I'm sure many of us limit less-healthy foods in our diets so that we can enjoy the occasional "treat". I love mayo, but I usually forgo it so I can have a bit more cheese (imagine that!) with a relatively clear conscience. What kinds of foods do you skimp on so that you can "reward" yourself?

I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.
