Poetry to our ears - and yours

February 16, 2009
A beautiful poem graces our butter packages for a limited time. We just love it! And in celebration, we're having a contest. Write a haiku about Cabot Creamery or any of our products and submit it here. Details are below 'Butter Taps' by poet Leslie McGrath

Butter Taps

Too light, too ardent
to lay on the tongue
or take up space
between the teeth's pearly gates,
butter slips into a pale yellow coat,
and begins its inward journey

singing of the field's spiky green urges
singing of the cow's ruminations
under clover sun, under cover of cloud
singing of evening's steamy letdown

singing of the memory of the heat
the farmer's hand has pressed
on the withers of his favorite
before the lights turn low
and the latch scratches goodnight.

Leslie McGrath doesn't churn out poetry for just anyone. The award-winning writer is a Connecticut native, foodie, integrative health counselor and is Cordon Bleu-certified in Tuscan cooking -- in other words, she was a natural choice to wax poetic about Cabot.

Leslie has written quite a lot about food, and works as a holistic health counselor. She won the Pablo Neruda prize in poetry in 2004 and the Philbrick chapbook award in 2007.  A graduate of the Bennington Writing Seminars, her poems have been published widely throughout the United States, as well as in Japan, Ireland, and India (in translation.)

We are so excited about what she wrote for us! You can read more about Leslie at TheDay.com.

Blissful cheese heaven
Vermont is where it is at
Love the Cabot cheese

The contest is a good idea but the prizes are a little light. Three days ago, we bought the two-pound slab of Cabot Seriously Sharp cheddar that is sold at Costco, and we are already half-way through it. Of course that included adding chewy flavor to one homemade lasagna and the toasted topping of one shepherd's pie. I don't know how long 8 ounces would last in this household. Actually I do know: the length of one cheese and cracker session in front of the fireplace. Still, I'd rather have 8 ounces than nothing, so I'm working on my poem.

Be proud Cabot's cows
Sliced, Melted, grated, as is
Your cheese entices

I cannot write books
Or paint, or sculpt, or compose
My cheese is my art

Moo! You take my milk.
Crafting long-lasting cheeses
Make me immortal.

cover with cabot
naked crackers are calling
ah satisfying

Seriously sharp
The secret of Welsh Rarebit
That's good cheese, alright!

Fromage or queso?
Neither, give me local cheese.
Cabot is my choice.

My tongue doth delight
In cheesy Cabot pleasures
Most heavenly curd!

Cabot Creamery's
Contented cow ambrosia
Cheddar for the soul

Moo cow, my moo cow
Cabot cheddar so divine
How do you do it?

Praise family farms
Backbone of Cabot's products
American pride

Cheese -- gooey, stringy
Unctuous to my tongue and mouth
Creamy, melty, moo.

Cabot cheese pleases
A taste sensation on tongue
I always want more

Spray me all over
Best way to top a sundae
Gobs of sweet whipped cream

A purple jacket?
Think you are Prince? Now I see.
Vintage Choice cheddar

Glass of wine, cheese tray.
Relaxing after hard day
No need for dinner

A snowy Sunday
Grilled cheddar sandwich and soup
Forget shoveling

I am a cheese curd
Want to roar but only squeak
Pity me my fate

When hunger attacks
Have a snack that bites you back
Horseradish Cheddar

LOL! Very creative! :)

Where did cheddar start?
English village of Cheddar.
Vermont makes it best

Cabot Cheese, my love.
My lactose intolerance.
So true, love is pain.

Good one, except our
cheeses contain no lactose!
Pleasure without pain. :)

when melted and hot,
you bubble over cracker,
and I praise Cabot!

\\\\

wine for a slight buzz
washes cheddar down my throat
lips lick for one more.

\\\\

sexy cheese for me
white crumbles into night, silk
cheddar stirs the stars.

\\\\
only Cabot can
fondue, tongue tango, melt and
inspire poems.

I love your idea, but am a bit dismayed the prize is 8oz of cheese. Seems you value poetry on the one hand, but devalue it on the other. Make it 80oz at least, for heaven's sake.. or throw in a free cow. :)

The cheese is just a token of appreciation for playing along. The value of poetry and other arts is immeasurable, we agree!

O, bovine temptress,
Thy sultry cheese define thee,
Lucious, full-bodied.

What is Cabot's dream?
Their Cheddar in all our homes
Everyone then wins.

I crave mac n' cheese
Elbow noodles and cheddar
Cover with bacon

Zero grams lactose?
no whey, your cheese is the best!
Long Live Cabot Cheese!

Hail to the Seriously Sharp Vermont taste
Great Cheddar of the Cheesy race
Above them you take your place, Colby, Muenster and Jack
And stand proudly at the front of the pack
