Protect Your Pet from Salmonella

February 10, 2009
shelby.jpgThe peanut recalls have affected so many products that it's hard to keep up sometimes. As far-reaching as the recall has become, it's taken a step further recently and now includes many familiar pet food brands.

According to USA Today there is yet to be an immediate cause for concern (as of this writing). But the potential for serious illness in our beloved pets is no less worrying:

There have been no reports of pet illnesses associated with the outbreak, the FDA says. Symptoms to look out for include lethargy, fever, vomiting and diarrhea.

For those consumers who would rather be safe than sorry, there is an alternative: many pet owners are starting to make their own pet food.

Homemade pet food is very easy to make, and it allows owners to manage exactly what their pets are eating at all times. Cabot can help you out with some great dog snack recipes, and eHow has a good, basic guide to making your own dog food.
